'Game of Thrones' actor joins 'Maze Runner' sequel as the villain - Los Angeles Movies

The latest young adult novel turned movie "The Maze Runner" took the box office by storm and its sequel got a release date. On September 26 Entertainment Weekly revealed that the upcoming sequel "The Scorch Trials" has cast "Game of Thrones" actor Aiden Gillen as the villain in the film. Gillen is best known for playing the role of Littlefinger on the popular HBO seres, which will return for a fifth season next spring.

Gillen will play Assistant Director Janson, the second highest ranking official of WICKED, who meets the boys before their next trial. In the books, Janson greets the boy after they wake up in building they were sent to after the maze ended. He doesn't speak to them and is seated at a desk behind an invisible forcefield. The gladers refer to him as "Rat-Man," a nickname created by Minho.

That is the only time the character appears in the second book, although the end of the first film seems to skip over this scene. The helicopter at the end is flying towards the abandoned city which is rather close to the maze, although it's possible they will be taken to a neutral location to meet Janson and get supplies. The character plays a much larger role in the third book "The Death Cure."

"The Scorch Trials" film is based on the second book in the trilogy by author James Dashner, and follows the Gladers as they completes the second phase of their mission. The story takes place in an abandoned city in the middle of the desert, and the boys have to get to a certain location within a specific amount of time to find the antidote for the deadly virus. The city is also inhabited by people known as Cranks, who are infected with the virus, and trying to stop the boys from succeeding.

Filming for the second film is expected to begin in October, after the actors complete the press tour to promote "The Maze Runner" release. The new film will be shot on location in New Mexico, and Wes Ball is returning to direct the sequel. The film is scheduled to be released on September 18, 2015.

On September 26 A.V. Club revealed that Gillen is making the transition from television to film, but is keeping the role of the villain. Janson doesn't really become the villain until the third story, but the film could expand his character in the second film. Janson was initially trained at WICKED by Thomas, although Thomas has no memory of this.
